The Colonel William Jones House, also recognized as the William Jones State Historic Site, is a significant historical landmark located in Gentryville, within the Lincoln State Park in Jackson Township, Spencer County, Indiana. This historic house was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 12, 1975, marking its importance in the history of the region.
William Jones, the namesake of the Colonel William Jones House, was a multifaceted individual who was a farmer, merchant, soldier, and politician. He resided, farmed, and ran a store in the Little Pigeon Creek Community, an area that is now part of the town of Gentryville, Indiana. Notably, Abraham Lincoln, who lived in close proximity, was employed in Jones' store.
The Colonel William Jones House was constructed by Jones himself across the street from his cabin around 1834, a testament to his successful business ventures. The one-story, five-room, brick house is designed in the Federal style with Classical Revival features, including a Greek columned front porch and pediment added around 1887. The house also features a captain's walk on the roof and a small loft. An interesting fact is that the corner cupboard in the kitchen is said to have been built by Abraham Lincoln's father, Thomas Lincoln. The house is situated on one of the highest points in the area, offering a commanding view of the surroundings.
