The Tar Tunnel, located on the north bank of the River Severn in the Ironbridge Gorge at Coalport, England, is an intriguing part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums. Administered by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, this abandoned tunnel is one of ten attractions that make up the museum complex. The tunnel's history and unique features make it a fascinating part of the museum's offerings.

Visiting the Tar Tunnel

Visitors to the Tar Tunnel should be aware that while it is unsafe to enter the tunnel due to a build-up of gas, they can still get a view along part of its length from the entrance. In the past, visitors were provided with hard hats and were able to enter the first 300 feet of the brick-lined tunnel as far as an iron gate. Electric lighting is provided to enhance the viewing experience.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Coalport China Museum in Telford, England offers visitors an insight into the history of porcelain production in Shropshire. Located in the original Coalport China factory buildings, the museum showcases the area's industrial heritage. Visitors can explore exhibits of fine china, learn about the manufacturing process, and see demonstrations of traditional techniques. The museum's setting along the River Severn adds to its appeal. While some visitors appreciate the historical significance and the quality of the exhibits, others mention that the museum is relatively small and may not engage children for extended periods. The gift shop offers a selection of china pieces, which some find enjoyable while others consider pricey. Overall, the museum provides a solid educational experience for those interested in ceramics and local history, but may not cater to all audiences equally.
