Claymills Victorian Pumping Station is a unique museum in Burton upon Trent. The museum is an integrated industrial site dating from 1885 , designed specifically to pump brewery effluent to a farm some four miles away. Burton upon Trent was (and still is) a major brewing centre because of the quality of the ground water - in 1850 there were 30+ breweries and the largest, Bass, was bottling over 1 million bottles per year. IPA - India Pale Ale - was brewed in Burton and sent to ... India! The museum has been fully restored and offers both steaming and non-steaming visits. We have four 1885 beam engines in full opersations aliongside 30+ other steam engines, all operational and all powered by steam from our original Lancashire boilers and maintained in our original Victorian workshop. Almost everything on site was used on site when the pumping station was operational - we don't collect anything else. Often described as a 'hidden gem', Histroric England say we are the best preserved and most complete Victorian pumping station in England.
