Château du Bucheneck, also known as Burg Bucheneck, is a former water castle located in Soultz-Haut-Rhin in Alsace. This historical monument was built in the early 13th century by the Bishop of Strasbourg. It served as a small castle replacing a manor house in the north of Soultz, which was the property of the Bishop of Strasbourg since 1079. The castle has a rich history and has undergone several transformations over the centuries.
The castle was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years' War and was only renovated in the early 18th century. Despite the decision of Bishop Armand I. Gaston Maximilien de Rohan-Soubise in 1719 to demolish the castle, it was restored and survived. The French Revolution marked the end of the bishops' rule over the city of Soultz and the castle ceased to be the seat of the bailiff.
Since 1990, the castle has been the seat of the city museum. After being used as a factory in the early 20th century, the building was converted into a residential house in 1969. In 1976, the city bought the castle and began restoring it the following year. Today, it serves as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's rich history.
