Charlotte Museum of History and its collection

The Charlotte Museum of History saves and shares the Charlotte region’s history, connecting the past to current issues and opportunities. We believe a shared understanding of the past can enrich the community’s future, and we work to tell the stories of all parts of our community and all those who have inhabited our area. Museum programs and exhibits explore important civic themes and how their meaning has evolved over time, including ideals of liberty, freedom, equity, justice, democracy, and citizenship. The museum sits on an eight-acre wooded campus in fast-changing East Charlotte. It’s the site of the oldest surviving house in Mecklenburg County, the Rock House built circa 1774 for the Hezekiah Alexander household. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a designated local landmark, the house is Charlotte’s only remaining structure from the days of the Revolutionary period. Nearby are a relocated barn dating to the era, a reconstructed log kitchen, and a reconstructed two-story springhouse. The museum is also home to the historic Siloam School, a Rosenwald-era schoolhouse recently saved and relocated to the museum's campus. Tours of the site and museum programs highlight how people lived during that era and tell of the many cultures that came together to build Charlotte, including the stories of Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities.

Charlotte Museum of History Reviews

Charlotte Museum of History has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Charlotte Museum of History offers visitors an informative look into the city's past, focusing on local history and culture. The museum's main attraction is the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, an 18th-century rock house that provides insight into colonial life. Visitors appreciate the well-preserved artifacts and exhibits that showcase Charlotte's development from a small settlement to a major urban center.

The museum's educational programs and guided tours receive positive feedback for their engaging content and knowledgeable staff. Many visitors find the exhibits on the gold rush era and the city's role in the American Revolution particularly interesting. The outdoor grounds, including the garden and nature trails, add to the overall experience.

However, some visitors note that the museum is relatively small and can be explored in a short time. A few reviewers mention that certain exhibits could benefit from updates or more interactive elements to appeal to younger audiences. The museum's location, while historically significant, is sometimes described as a bit out of the way for tourists staying in the downtown area.

Despite these minor drawbacks, the Charlotte Museum of History is generally regarded as a worthwhile visit for those interested in local history and seeking a deeper understanding of Charlotte's roots and development.
