The Cattle Bank, situated at 102 E. University Ave. in Champaign, Illinois, holds the distinction of being the oldest documented commercial structure in the city. Constructed in 1858, this historic building has witnessed the city's growth and transformation over the years. It initially served as a branch of the Grand Prairie Bank of Urbana, Illinois, providing banking and loan services to local cattlemen. Today, it houses the Champaign County History Museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history of the region.
Since 2001, the Champaign County History Museum has found its home in the historic Cattle Bank building. The museum, founded in 1972 and open for exhibition in 1974, originally occupied the Wilber Mansion located at 907 W. University Ave. in Champaign, Illinois. In 1997, the museum sold the mansion and used the proceeds to purchase the Cattle Bank building. Despite the reduced space, the museum continues to showcase a selection of its collection, offering visitors an insight into the county's past.
