The Tonindustrie Scheibbs was a ceramic factory that operated during the interwar years in Scheibbs. It had a connection with the Wiener Werkstätte, a production community of visual artists in Vienna. The style of the ceramics produced was primarily expressionist, with a tendency towards the grotesque and influences from Far Eastern and naive art.
The Tonindustrie Scheibbs was established in 1923 by Ludwig Weinbrenner, a horticulturist from Vienna. Weinbrenner was a culturally interested and artistically talented individual who had studied at the Technical University of Vienna. He was also a successful breeder of orchids, cacti, roses, and hydrangeas.
On his property, Weinbrenner discovered a small deposit of clay. This discovery led him to establish a factory. He began a provisional artistic ceramic production on the premises of his own nursery, with the help of Rudolf Knörlein, an artist from the Wiener Werkstätten, and the sisters Elisabeth and Adelgunde Krippel, both graduates of Michael Powolny.
