The Cayuga Nature Center (CNC) is an educational institution that focuses on nature and environmental issues. It is situated on the west side of Cayuga Lake in Tompkins County, New York. This location offers a unique opportunity for visitors to learn about the environment while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
The Cayuga Nature Center is situated three miles south of Taughannock Falls State Park on the west shore of Cayuga Lake. The CNC Lodge, heated by a biomass furnace designed and installed by Cornell engineering students, features exhibits that combine live, mounted, and fossil specimens with interactive stations. These exhibits highlight the ecology and biodiversity of the Cayuga Basin, providing an engaging and educational experience for visitors.
In addition to the CNC Lodge, the Cayuga Nature Center also boasts a variety of other facilities. These include Smith Woods, an old-growth forest; TreeTops, a six-story tree house built by the Ithaca High School class of 2000; a zoological collection of 30 animals; a seasonal Butterfly Garden; a turtle pond; and a 120-acre campus with five miles of hiking trails. These diverse facilities offer a range of experiences for visitors of all ages.
