Casamata was a part of a defensive line of forts in Matamoros, which included Paredes, Guerrero, Puertas Verdes, Monterrey, Bravo, Laredo, Matamoros, and Independencia. These eight forts were destroyed when they lost their defensive utility, leaving Casamata as the only surviving fort.
In December 1969, the residents of Matamoros claimed ownership of Casamata and established The Casamata Museum the following year. This was made possible by the first chronicler of Matamoros, Don Eliseo Paredes Manzano, who also served as the first director and founder of the Museum.
In 2006, under the mayorship of Baltazar Hinojosa Ochoa, several modifications were made to the Casamata Museum. These included the addition of adjoining areas to the fort, replacement of doors and windows, and restoration of the original roof.
