Caral, situated in Peru, is recognized as the oldest known city settlement on the American continent. It is located approximately 200 km north of Lima and 25 km inland from the Pacific coast in the valley of the mostly dried up RÃo Supe. The settlement area of Caral spans approximately 620 hectares and is characterized by six flat, stepped pyramid-shaped elevations. The largest of these structures measures 160 m in length, 150 m in width, and 18 m in height.
