Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre
Source

Capelinhos is a volcano situated in the western part of Faial Island, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. It forms the westernmost cape of Faial Island, known as Ponta dos Capelinhos. The volcano presents itself as an eroded volcanic cone with an altitude of 143 meters, with cliffs that plunge into the Atlantic Ocean.

Eruption History of Capelinhos

The first and last eruption of Capelinhos occurred from September 27, 1957, to October 24, 1958. This eruption was preceded by a seismic episode dating back to early May 1957. The eruption resulted in the formation of a small horseshoe-shaped island, which later merged with Faial Island. The eruption ended on October 24, 1958, and since then, the volcano has been undergoing degassing, cooling, and erosion.

The Lighthouse of Ponta dos Capelinhos

The old lighthouse of Ponta dos Capelinhos is situated on the volcano. Despite its proximity to the volcano during the eruption, the lighthouse was relatively spared and is now separated from the ocean by the volcano. This lighthouse serves as a significant landmark and a testament to the volcanic activity that took place.
