CAF Rocky Mountain Wing and its collection

The CAF Rocky Mountain Wing Museum is situated at the Grand Junction Regional Airport in Colorado. The museum houses artifacts and exhibits from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. This provides visitors with a comprehensive view of American military aviation history across several significant periods.

Aircraft Operated by the Museum

In addition to its exhibits, the CAF Rocky Mountain Wing Museum operates two aircraft that are part of the CAF's fleet of over 170 vintage warbirds. These two aircraft are the largest and smallest single-engine aircraft used by American armed forces during World War II. They are the Grumman TBM Avenger and the Piper J-3 (Army L-4 or Navy NE-1) Grasshopper.

Interactive Experiences at the Museum

The CAF Rocky Mountain Wing Museum offers more than just viewing exhibits. Visitors can also schedule rides as passengers in the Grumman TBM Avenger and the Piper J-3 Grasshopper. These rides can be scheduled either at the museum or at airshows where these aircraft are also exhibited. This provides a unique and immersive experience for visitors.

CAF Rocky Mountain Wing Reviews

CAF Rocky Mountain Wing has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The CAF Rocky Mountain Wing in Grand Junction, Colorado, offers visitors a chance to explore aviation history with a focus on World War II-era aircraft. This small but dedicated museum houses a collection of restored vintage planes, including the notable B-25 Mitchell bomber. Visitors appreciate the opportunity to get up close to these historic aircraft and sometimes even witness them in flight during special events. The volunteer staff is often praised for their knowledge and enthusiasm, providing informative tours and sharing personal stories that bring the exhibits to life. While the museum's size is limited compared to larger aviation museums, it makes up for it with its hands-on approach and the passion of its caretakers. Some visitors note that the collection is modest and the facility could benefit from updates or expansions. Despite its limitations, many find the museum to be an interesting stop for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs, particularly those with an interest in military aircraft.
