Source

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens are a beautiful and serene location situated within South Park in Buffalo, New York. This location is not just a garden, but a living museum that offers a unique blend of art, history, and nature. The gardens are a product of the combined efforts of landscaping architect Frederick Law Olmsted, glass-house architects Lord & Burnham, and botanist and plant-explorer John F. Cowell.

Origins and Development of the Gardens

The concept of the Botanical Gardens was first conceived in 1868, and it took shape over the years, culminating in the creation of South Park. This park, which is home to the botanical gardens, was developed between 1894 and 1900 from a vast expanse of 156 acres of farmland. The park was designed to feature a variety of hardy species, including an arboretum, pinetum, shrub garden, and a bog garden.

Architectural Marvel of the Conservatory

The conservatory at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is a marvel of architectural design. The tri-domed glass, wood, and steel structure was designed by Lord & Burnham, renowned conservatory designers of the time. Constructed between 1897 and 1899, it was one of the largest public greenhouses in the country at the time of its completion.
