In 1986, the museum moved to its current location in the San Telmo district. The grand reopening of the museum took place on September 1, 1989. This move marked a significant milestone in the museum's history, providing it with a permanent home and allowing it to better serve its mission of showcasing modern art.

The Extensive Collection of MAMBA

The collection of the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art boasts over 6000 works. These include pieces by renowned artists such as Josef Albers, Antonio Berni, Joseph Beuys, Pablo Curatella Manes, Salvador Dalí, Raquel Forner, Romulo Macció, Marta Minujín, Joan Miró, Emilio Pettoruti, Pablo Picasso, Xul Solar, and Wassily Kandinsky. The museum's extensive collection offers visitors a comprehensive overview of modern art.

Expansion of the Museum

In 2005, due to the growing collection and the need for more flexible exhibition spaces, an expansion of the museum headquarters was deemed necessary. The museum temporarily closed for renovations projected by Emilio Ambasz. In December 2010, the first phase of the expansion was opened, providing an 11,000 square meter building with spacious exhibition galleries and storage rooms. This expansion allowed the museum to store its collection according to international standards.

Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art Reviews

Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art, located in the vibrant San Telmo neighborhood, offers visitors a comprehensive look at Argentine and international modern art. The museum's collection spans from the 1940s to the present day, featuring works by both established and emerging artists.

Visitors often praise the museum's well-curated exhibitions, which rotate regularly to showcase different aspects of modern and contemporary art. The spacious, light-filled galleries provide an excellent environment for viewing the artworks. Many reviewers appreciate the mix of permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, which keeps the museum experience fresh and engaging.

The museum's architecture, a renovated tobacco warehouse, adds to its appeal. The industrial-style building complements the modern art within and has become an attraction in itself. However, some visitors mention that the museum could benefit from more informative labels or audio guides to provide context for the artworks, especially for those less familiar with modern art.

While the museum is not as extensive as some of the world's most famous modern art museums, it offers a solid representation of Latin American modern art. This focus is often cited as a strength, giving visitors insight into the region's artistic movements and cultural influences.

On the downside, a few visitors have noted that the museum can feel a bit empty at times, and some have expressed a desire for a wider variety of artworks or more interactive exhibits. Additionally, while many find the admission price reasonable, others feel it could be slightly lower.

Overall, the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art is a worthwhile destination for art enthusiasts and those interested in exploring Argentina's cultural scene. Its combination of thought-provoking exhibitions, interesting architecture, and focus on Latin American art makes it a valuable addition to Buenos Aires' cultural landscape.
