Bowood House and Gardens and its collection

Bowood House and Gardens
Source

Bowood House & Gardens, located near Calne in Wiltshire, has been home to the Lansdowne family since 1754 and features what is regarded as one of 'Capability' Brown’s best-preserved parklands. It’s also considered to be one of the earliest examples of the legendary landscape designer’s fully-developed style. Enthusiastically marking this year’s Capability Brown Festival - celebrating the tercentenary of his birth - the 'Terrestrial Delights' exhibition (through to 31st October) in the House’s Orangery charts the development of the parkland in fascinating detail.

Bowood House and Gardens Reviews

Bowood House and Gardens has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Bowood House and Gardens, located in Derry Hill, England, is a grand estate that offers visitors a blend of history, art, and natural beauty. The 18th-century country house showcases impressive architecture and houses a collection of family heirlooms and artwork. Many visitors appreciate the well-preserved interiors, particularly the library and the laboratory where Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen.

The extensive gardens are a major draw, featuring a variety of landscapes including an Italian-inspired terrace, a walled garden, and an arboretum. The Capability Brown-designed parkland receives praise for its picturesque views and walking trails. Families often enjoy the adventure playground, which includes attractions like a pirate ship and aerial walkways.

While most visitors find the house tour informative, some note that it can feel rushed at times. The gardens generally receive higher praise than the house itself, with many finding them well-maintained and peaceful. The on-site café gets mixed reviews, with some enjoying the offerings while others find them overpriced.

Some visitors mention that the admission fee is on the higher side, but many feel it's justified by the range of attractions and activities available. The seasonal events, such as the rhododendron walks in spring, are often highlighted as particularly enjoyable.

Overall, Bowood House and Gardens provides a good day out, especially for those interested in British history and landscape gardens. However, visitors should be prepared for a fair amount of walking to fully experience the grounds.
