The Bordeaux Botanical Garden is a scientific institution located in the Gironde department in France. Its main aim is to introduce the world of plants, their diversity, nature, and the sustainable management of natural resources to all audiences. It serves as a space for conservation and preservation of this heritage. The garden is not only educational but also recreational, and it provides a tool for observation.
The Bordeaux Botanical Garden was established in 1629 and was originally known as the "Jardin des plantes". This medicinal garden, which has its roots in the medieval tradition, is a garden of simples, where medicinal, condimental or aromatic plants are grown. It has moved four times since its establishment. In 1750, it was located on the street named after it, Rue du Jardin des plantes.
Since May 12, 2019, the Bordeaux Botanical Garden has dedicated a plot of about 70 m2 to the plants that African slaves harvested in colonial dwellings. This includes both yield plants, grown for the masters, such as cotton, coffee, indigo, tobacco, sugar cane, and also plants that fed the captives such as corn, potatoes, and cassava.
