The museum's collection was diverse and related to Lake Constance and its coastal landscapes. It included antiquities and natural history objects of all kinds, such as maps, city plans, pictures and photographs, coats of arms and seals, coins and documents from Lake Constance.
Despite criticism for its unsystematic and unappealing presentation, the Bodensee Museum managed to attract numerous visitors. This was largely due to the beginning of tourism in the Lake Constance region, which increased interest in the museum and its collections.
After World War II, the tradition of the Bodensee Museum was continued by the Städtisches Bodensee-Museum Friedrichshafen, established in 1957, and the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen, established in 1996. These museums carry on the legacy of the Bodensee Museum, preserving and showcasing the history and natural history of the Lake Constance region.
