The Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark is home to a significant archaeological site, first recognized in 1929. The site underwent its first large-scale excavation in 1932, and since then, it has yielded a wealth of artifacts and remains from various time periods. Visitors to the site can gain a deep understanding of the region's history and the people who once inhabited it.

The Blackwater Draw Museum

The Blackwater Draw Museum, originally opened to the public in 1969, was primarily established to showcase artifacts discovered at the Blackwater Locality No. 1 site. In 2017, the museum relocated to the Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) campus, expanding its focus to include local history and a broader scope of archaeology. Visitors can now enjoy a more comprehensive view of the region's past.

Current Exhibits and Management at the Blackwater Draw Museum

The Blackwater Draw Museum currently houses the Miles Collection, which showcases Southwestern pottery, basketry, and textiles. Since August 2017, the museum has been under the direction of Dr. Brendon Asher of ENMU in Portales. In 2020, the museum hired its first Collections Manager, Samantha Bomkamp, further enhancing its commitment to preserving and showcasing the region's history.

The Blackwater Draw Site and Museum in Clovis, New Mexico, offers visitors an insight into the Clovis culture and early human habitation in North America. The site is significant for its archaeological importance, as it's where the Clovis points were first discovered, leading to the identification of the Clovis culture.

Visitors appreciate the museum's informative displays about the excavation process and the artifacts found at the site. The museum, though small, provides a good overview of the Clovis people and their tools. Many find the exhibits well-organized and educational, offering a look at mammoth bones and various stone tools.

The outdoor archaeological site allows visitors to see the actual dig locations, which adds depth to the museum experience. However, some visitors note that the outdoor portion can be affected by weather conditions and may not always be accessible.

While the museum is praised for its historical significance and educational value, some visitors mention that it's relatively small and may not take long to explore thoroughly. Additionally, a few reviewers suggest that the facility could benefit from updates or expansions to enhance the visitor experience.

Overall, the Blackwater Draw Site and Museum is considered a worthwhile stop for those interested in archaeology, paleontology, or early American history. It provides a valuable educational experience, particularly for understanding the Clovis culture and early human presence in the Americas.
