The Bergbaumuseum Klagenfurt was situated in a 500-meter-long tunnel. This tunnel was originally created in the middle of 1942 as an air-raid shelter, driven into a quarry used for the extraction of green slate into the Kreuzbergl.
The Bergbaumuseum Klagenfurt offered around 3000 m² of exhibition space. The large entrance hall, known as the "Felsenhalle", was used for regularly changing special exhibitions.
The Bergbaumuseum Klagenfurt provided a comprehensive overview of the mineralogy in Carinthian mining. Many exhibits were from the lead-zinc mineralization of the Drauzug from the mine in Bleiberg/Kreuth, which was closed in 1993.
The paleontological department of the Bergbaumuseum Klagenfurt displayed fossils from various geological ages from all over the world. These exhibits spanned about 500 million years of earth history.
