The Bergbaumuseum Achthal, located in Achthal, is dedicated to the history of iron ore mining on the Teisenberg. This mountain, situated between Inzell in the Traunstein district and Teisendorf and Anger in the Berchtesgadener Land district, was once a significant site for iron ore extraction. The museum provides a comprehensive overview of this historical industry.
The Bergbaumuseum Achthal is housed in the former administrative building of the ironworks, a structure that is now a protected monument. This adds a layer of historical authenticity to the museum. Additionally, the museum features an artificially created show tunnel, providing visitors with a unique insight into the mining process.
The Bergbaumuseum Achthal was established in 1999/2000, evolving from a local history room that was founded in 1984 and expanded several times. The museum's previous permanent exhibition ran from 2000 to 2021. Currently, the museum is undergoing a redesign and has been closed since October 2021. It is expected to reopen in the spring of 2025, offering a refreshed and updated perspective on the history of iron ore mining in the region.
