The Axminster Museum, founded in 1982, was located in the Old Police Station and Courthouse in the heart of Axminster, Devon, England. This historic building, a Grade II listed structure, was built in the 1860s on the site of the old workhouse. The two-storey stone building features five bays with three asymmetrical gables and its main doorway was originally a carriage entrance.
The museum's collections offered a diverse range of exhibits. These included items related to the town's carpet industry, which was founded by Thomas Whitty in 1755, agricultural tools, archaeological finds, coins and medals, costumes and textiles, old photographs, and archives. The museum also hosted occasional special exhibitions, providing a dynamic and varied experience for visitors.
In 2015, Axminster Heritage Ltd assumed responsibility for the management and care of the Axminster Museum Collection and relocated it to their nearby Heritage Centre. This centre, which opened in 2016, is based in the old carpet factory and houses many of the exhibits that were previously displayed in the museum.
