Austråttborgen, also known as Austrått, is a renowned manor house from the Middle Ages, situated in the municipality of Ørland at the mouth of the Trondheim fjord. This historic site was the seat of powerful chieftain families during the medieval period, making it a significant landmark in Trøndelag.
The manor's medieval structures were primarily constructed from wood, with the exception of the church, which was built from stone in the early 13th century. This church served as a private chapel for the manor's owner and was equipped with a large tower that could be used for defense.
During the Second World War, the German occupation constructed a fortress, known as Fort Austrått, which included the gun turret 'C' from the battleship Gneisenau. This is the only preserved gun turret of its kind. Although the fortress was demolished in 1968, the battery was maintained until 1977. In 1990, the fortress was restored by the Defense Department at a cost of 1,100,000 NKr. Today, guided tours of the fort are available during the summer months.
