The Austin–Whittemore House was built by Horace J. Austin, who was one of the earliest settlers in this area of Dakota Territory. He was also a Dakota Territory legislator. After his death, the house was owned by his adopted daughter, Pansy, and her husband, Arthur Whittemore. The house has a rich history and has been a part of many significant events in the area.
The Austin–Whittemore House is one of the last surviving examples of 1800s architecture in the Vermillion area. It reflects a merging of Late Victorian architecture, particularly Italianate, with adaptations stylistic of the American frontier. This unique blend of architectural styles makes the house a fascinating place to visit for those interested in architecture and history.
