Atchison County Historical Society Museum and its collection

The Atchison County Historical Society Museum is a dedicated institution for preserving the rich history of Atchison County, Kansas. The museum is named after the United States Senator and legendary 'President for a day', David Rice Atchison. It is located in the historic 1880 Santa Fe Freight Depot in Atchison, Kansas. The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of topics, including the Lewis and Clark expedition, Amelia Earhart, Jesse Stone, the railroad history of Atchison County, and a military collection with over 200 weapons spanning the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and both World Wars.

Independence Creek: Lewis & Clark Historic Site

In addition to the museum, the Atchison County Historical Society operates the Independence Creek: Lewis & Clark Historic Site. This site covers 13.5 acres of native grasses and wildflowers and features a re-creation of a Kanza Indian earth lodge. It is connected by a 5-mile hiking/biking trail to the Atchison riverfront. This site offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Atchison County and learn about its indigenous history.

Temporary and Traveling Exhibits

The Atchison County Historical Society Museum regularly hosts temporary and traveling exhibits, providing visitors with a variety of historical perspectives. For instance, from 27 June to 9 August 2015, it hosted a Smithsonian traveling exhibit called 'Hometown Teams.' These exhibits offer a dynamic and ever-changing experience for visitors, ensuring there is always something new to discover.
