The Ashfall Fossil Beds are protected as a State Historical Park. The 360-acre park includes a visitor center with interpretive displays and a working fossil preparation laboratory. The park also features the Hubbard Rhino Barn, a protected ongoing excavation site showcasing fossil Teleoceras, a native hippo-like ancestral rhinoceros, and ancestral horses.
The Hubbard Rhino Barn, a part of the park, opened in 2009. This 17,500-square-foot pavilion allows visitors to observe paleontologists as they excavate new discoveries right where the fossilized remains are preserved. Specially constructed walkways provide visitors with an unobstructed close-up view of the paleontologists at work during the summer field season.

Ashfall Fossil Beds has 1 rating.
Ashfall Fossil Beds in Royal, Nebraska offers visitors a remarkable window into prehistoric life. This state historical park showcases a rich deposit of exceptionally well-preserved fossils from the Miocene epoch, approximately 12 million years ago. The main attraction is the Rhino Barn, where visitors can observe ongoing excavations and see fossils in their original position.
The museum's interpretive center provides informative displays and educational programs that help visitors understand the significance of the site. Guests appreciate the knowledgeable staff who are always ready to answer questions and provide insights into the fossils and the ancient ecosystem they represent.
While the museum is relatively small, it compensates with the quality and uniqueness of its exhibits. The walking trails offer pleasant views of the surrounding prairies, adding to the overall experience. However, some visitors note that the remote location means limited amenities in the immediate area, so planning ahead for food and accommodations is advisable.
The site can be quite warm during summer months, and the outdoor portions may not be as enjoyable during inclement weather. Despite these minor drawbacks, most visitors find the experience educational and engaging, particularly for those interested in paleontology and natural history.
Overall, Ashfall Fossil Beds provides a rare opportunity to see a snapshot of ancient life preserved in remarkable detail, making it a worthwhile destination for families, students, and anyone curious about Earth's prehistoric past.
