The Magletsch Fortress, also known as 'The Hammer', is a significant historical site in Gretschins, Wartau, in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. Constructed in 1940, this underground defense facility offers a unique insight into the military history of Switzerland during the World War II era.
Since 2000, a portion of the Magletsch Fortress has been converted into a museum, open to the public. Visitors can explore the fortress and learn about its historical significance, the strategic role it played during the war, and the daily life of the soldiers stationed there.
The Magletsch Fortress was designed to accommodate 381 men. It featured a comprehensive infrastructure, including accommodation and catering sections, a bakery and laundry, and a hospital with 70 beds. The fortress was also equipped with two water reservoirs with a total capacity of 1.6 million liters of drinking water, three ship diesel engines for power production, and two fuel tanks each with a capacity of 100,000 liters of diesel.
