The Archivio di Stato di Parma is a repository of a wide range of historical documents. It preserves the documentation produced by institutions before the unification of Italy and those state post-unification, generally included in the territory of the province. The archive also houses documents from public bodies, families, individuals, associations, and other private entities that hold significant historical interest.
The Archivio di Stato di Parma holds a rich archival heritage. This includes documentation produced by the Farnese and Bourbon institutions, up to the period of the Restoration of the ancient Duchy of Parma, Piacenza, and Guastalla, then Pontremoli. The archive also preserves the records of convents and brotherhoods that were suppressed in the ducal territory during the Bourbon and Napoleonic age.
The Archivio di Stato di Parma is home to a variety of collections. These include the Sanseverini Collection of drawings, cartographic funds, which are among the richest in Italy with over 12,000 pieces dating from the 15th century to the present. The archive also houses a collection of seals and punches, and a collection of about 11,000 parchments extracted from the archives of convents and feudal families. This collection includes diplomas of kings and emperors, papal bulls, and precious illuminated parchments.
