Ambrussum is a significant Roman archaeological site located in the southwest of France, specifically in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon. The site dates back to the period of the Roman conquest of Gaul, making it a rich source of historical and cultural information. Visitors can explore the remnants of this ancient civilization and gain insights into the Roman era.
The Pont d'Ambrussum, also known as Pont Ambroix, is a central feature of the site. This bridge, where the Via Domitia crossed the Vidourle river, dates back to the 1st century BC. Originally, the bridge was about 100 meters long and featured 11 full arches, making it a remarkable example of Roman engineering.
In the southern part of the Ambrussum site, visitors can find the Roman oppidum, a fortified settlement enclosed by walls. This oppidum is located on a small hill that gently slopes towards the right bank of the Vidourle river. Excavations carried out in this area from the mid-18th century until 1967 have unearthed artifacts from various historical periods, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
