The Archaeological Museum of Venafro, located in the former convent of Santa Chiara, was established in June 1931. The museum was created to showcase a collection of artifacts that were discovered a decade earlier during the construction of a building on the slopes of Mount Santa Croce. These artifacts include capitals, frames, and statues, including two large male statues identified as Augustus and Tiberius from the Julio-Claudian era (1st century AD).

The Venus of Venafro

One of the highlights of the Archaeological Museum of Venafro is the beautiful statue of Venus from the Antonine era, commonly known as the "Venus of Venafro". This statue was discovered by chance in 1958 by a landowner who was carrying out agricultural work. It is believed that the statue was part of a fountain that adorned a wealthy residential building from the Augustan era.

The Aquarium Table of the Roman Aqueduct

The Archaeological Museum of Venafro also preserves an important epigraphic document: the large cippus or "Aquarium Table" of the Roman aqueduct of Venafro. This document testifies to the edict of Augustus, which was drafted between 17 and 11 BC, during the same period when the aqueduct was built. The edict regulated the use of the aqueduct, the distribution of water, and the magistrates competent in case of disputes.
