The shell of Appuldurcombe, once the grandest house on the Isle of Wight and still an important example of English baroque architecture: the 1701 south front has now been restored. It stands in ‘Capability’ Brown-designed grounds. An exhibition of photographs and prints depict the house and its history. You can also visit the Freemantle Gate (part of the 1770s neo-Classical addition to the estate) on the nearby public footpath, and the adjacent Falconry Centre (not under the care of English Heritage).

Appuldurcombe House in Wroxall, England, offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its impressive shell of a once-grand Baroque mansion. The house, now managed by English Heritage, stands as a testament to the area's rich history. While much of the interior is no longer intact, the exterior architecture and the surrounding grounds provide an interesting experience for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
The house's facade is particularly striking, with its symmetrical design and large windows typical of 18th-century architecture. Visitors can explore the grounds and admire the remaining features of the building, including some preserved rooms that give an idea of its former grandeur. The site also includes informative displays that help bring the house's history to life, detailing its past as a family home, a hotel, and a monastery.
The surrounding parkland, designed by the renowned Capability Brown, adds to the appeal of Appuldurcombe. The landscaped gardens offer pleasant walks and picturesque views of the Isle of Wight countryside. However, some visitors may find the experience somewhat limited due to the ruined state of much of the interior.
On the downside, the partially roofless nature of the building means that some areas are not accessible in poor weather conditions. Additionally, some visitors have noted that more could be done to enhance the interpretive materials and create a more immersive experience.
Despite these limitations, Appuldurcombe House provides an atmospheric and educational visit for those interested in architectural history and the stories of England's grand estates. The site's potential for improvement leaves room for enhancements in the future, which could further elevate the visitor experience.
