Before its transformation into the Aomori Museum of History, the building was known as the Michinoku Traditional Wooden Boat Museum. The current collection still pays homage to this past, introducing visitors to the history and folk culture of Aomori City, including its maritime traditions.
One of the highlights of the Aomori Museum of History is the Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property Collection. This includes the mudamahagi fishing boats from the Tsugaru Strait and surrounding areas, offering a unique insight into the region's fishing traditions and practices.
