The American Numismatic Society (ANS) is a New York-based organization that is dedicated to numismatics, the study of coins and medals. It is not to be confused with the larger American Numismatic Association based in Colorado Springs. The ANS operates as a research museum and is internationally recognized for its collection.

The Collection of the American Numismatic Society

The ANS boasts a collection of about 800,000 monetary pieces and related objects. This collection is of international stature and is matched only by the largest state collections in Europe. It is particularly rich in the field of Greek and Hellenistic coinage.

Exhibition at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York

The ANS's exhibition 'Drachmas Doubloons and Dollars: The History of Money' is currently on display at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. This exhibition showcases a variety of coins including a Brasher doubloon, a silver dollar from 1804, a Confederate half dollar, and the world's most valuable coin, the 1933 Double Eagle.

American Numismatic Society has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The American Numismatic Society in New York is a specialized museum dedicated to the study and preservation of coins, medals, and currency. Visitors appreciate the extensive collection that spans various cultures and time periods, offering a comprehensive look at monetary history. The museum's strengths lie in its academic approach and the depth of its exhibits, which are particularly appealing to coin enthusiasts and researchers. Many reviewers note the impressive library and research facilities available to members. However, some visitors find the presentation style somewhat dry and technical, which may not appeal to casual tourists or children. The museum's location in lower Manhattan is convenient, but its small size and focused content mean that a visit is typically brief for most guests. While not a mainstream tourist attraction, it's highly regarded by those with a specific interest in numismatics.
