Source

Alloa Tower is the ancestral home of the Earls of Mar. It is one of Scotland’s largest surviving medieval Tower houses with an important collection of portraits, silver and furniture; temporary exhibitions from family’s private collections. Features of the tower, where Queen Mary once stayed, include a medieval oak beamed roof, dungeon and 11 ft thick walls, and views from the tower's roof walk - the walkway goes all the way around the top of the tower.

Alloa Tower is a well-preserved medieval tower house located in Alloa, Scotland. Dating back to the 14th century, it offers visitors a glimpse into Scottish history. The tower's architecture is impressive, with thick stone walls and a distinctive shape that has withstood the test of time. Inside, visitors can explore various rooms across multiple floors, each providing insights into different periods of the tower's long history. The great hall is particularly noteworthy, with its high ceilings and period furnishings. Many visitors appreciate the informative displays and exhibits that detail the tower's past and its connection to the Erskine family. The panoramic views from the roof are often highlighted as a highlight, offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding Clackmannanshire landscape. However, some visitors note that the climb to the top can be challenging due to narrow, steep stairs. The staff are generally described as knowledgeable and friendly, enhancing the experience with their insights. While the tower is rich in history, some visitors mention that it might not have enough content to occupy visitors for extended periods, making it more suitable for a shorter visit. The surrounding grounds are pleasant but not extensive. Overall, Alloa Tower provides an authentic and educational experience for those interested in Scottish history and architecture, though it may not appeal as much to those seeking more interactive or expansive museum experiences.
