The Abteiberg Museum, also known as Städtisches Museum Abteiberg, is a museum located in Mönchengladbach, Germany. It was established in 1887 when objects were stored in a disused school building in the Gladbach district of Mönchengladbach. The museum was redesigned by Hans Hollein between 1972 and 1982 and was named Städtische Museum Abteiberg.

Redesign of the Museum

The museum was redesigned by Hans Hollein between 1972 and 1982, under the direction of Johannes Cladders, the first director-curator of the museum. The planning extended from 1972 to 1975, and the construction lasted until 1982. During this time, the museum was active in a temporary space.

Inclusion of Services within the Museum

The main idea behind the museum's design was to include services such as a cafeteria, bookstore, and ping-pong area within the museum, not around it. Visitors would have to traverse the museum to reach these areas, which could not open outside of the museum's opening hours as they were located within the establishment.
