The Abbe Creek School Museum is a historic one-room schoolhouse located one mile west of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, on E48. It holds the distinction of being the oldest standing one-room brick schoolhouse in Iowa. This unique attribute adds to the historical significance of the museum and provides visitors with a glimpse into the educational past of the region.
The Abbe Creek School Museum was dedicated as a museum on October 25, 1964, after being purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Pitlik in 1963. It is currently operated by the Linn County Conservation Board. The museum is open during the summer months, from June to August, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Group tours of the museum can be arranged upon request, providing an in-depth exploration of the historic schoolhouse.
