Visit the 1719 Herr House and Lancaster Longhouse, and explore the earliest stories of Lancaster County! The 1719 Herr House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the longest-standing dwelling in Lancaster County and the oldest standing Mennonite meetinghouse in the Western Hemisphere. Built by the Christian and Anna Herr family as their residence and their community's meetinghouse, it is the only remaining dwelling of the first group of Mennonite immigrants in the area. Experience the charm of its medieval Germanic architecture and catch a glimpse of 18th century Mennonite life. The story would be incomplete without delving into the history and culture of the first people who lived on, farmed, and hunted this land. Step into a full-scale reproduction longhouse, based on a Native dwelling studied as part of a nearby archaeological excavation. For thousands of years, south-central Pennsylvania was home to a variety of Indigenous tribes, including the Shenks Ferry, Conoy, Lenape, Mohawk, Nanticoke, Seneca, Shawnee, and Susquehannock-Conestoga peoples. Visitors will learn the context of what brought Indigenous people, Mennonite families, and other European immigrants together here.
