Exhibition 'Warner’s in Colour: A Tool for Design' in Warner Textile Archive

Colour enables us to make sense of our surroundings, but we have often found it hard to define. Colour is both objective and subjective. It can be scientifically defined as ‘the refraction of light from an object’, yet it is impossible to know how perception of colour differs from person to person.
Warner’s in Colour: A Tool for Design will celebrate colour as a fundamental part of the design process, exploring the collection held at the Archive through the lens of colour. We will examine the science behind colour production and its application within textile design and how shade, composition and tone can dramatically alter the essence of a design. Through the Archive Collection and items on display we will demonstrate the skill and knowledge required to apply colour effectively, showcasing its power to make a design truly iconic and timeless.
Within the exhibition you can expect to discover designs that cover Owen Jones Colour Theory, cataloguing colour, colour restriction, block printing, weaving, developments in applying colour and how colour in used in contemporary design.
For more detailed information, you can purchase our exhibition guide for just £2.50. This is also available in our online shop if you are unable to make the exhibition.
