Exhibition 'Tour highlights the 'hidden women' at the Oriental Museum' in Oriental Museum

Enjoy a self-led tour around the galleries, highlighting the ‘hidden women’ in the museum’s collections.

8th March was International Women's Day and 2018 also marks one hundred years since the first women gained the right to vote in the United Kingdom. Numerous events and exhibitions are taking place across the country to commemorate this momentous moment in British history. The Oriental Museum is celebrating this anniversary by highlighting some of the often overlooked women from around the world represented in the displays.

As you follow the trail, you encounter artists and collectors, queens, scholars, warriors, politicians and scientists. These stories span the whole of North Africa and Asia, and highlight the lives of women who lived thousands of years ago, as well as women who are alive today.

The self-guided tour includes just over 50 objects spread throughout the permanent galleries. Some were already on display but have been reinterpreted, others have never been displayed before.

All of these objects have stories to tell about the women who are portrayed on them or who made, used or collected them before they came to the museum.
